About

History

"Assiut is indeed one of the oldest cradles of human civilization."

Origin of Assiut’s name:

The Governorate derives its name from the ancient Egyptian word "Saut" meaning "guard", later altered to the present name Assiut. Such name reflected the position of Assiut as Egypt's gate to the south and the terminal of Al Arbaeen road that linked the valley with the oases and Egypt with Sudan. In older times, man, who had inhabited the heights and mountains surrounding Assiut, had to move to the valley, in search of water and other means of life such as agriculture, hunting and fishing.

Beginning of civilization in Assiut:

It was as early as Cairo 1500 B.C. that man in Assiut started building up his civilization. Some of the oldest monuments discovered, dating back to the dawn of history, bear the name of sites where the remnants of the "Tassa" and "Al Badari" civilizations were found.

Since old, Assiut had had an important role to play in the history of Egypt. It was also an export and import centre, particularly of ebony and ivory imported from Sudan.

On top of the Governorate's parts in the national history of Egypt, there emerges its outstanding role in the 1919 Revolution: With the object of quelling rebellion in Upper Egypt and Assiut, British troops were sent there by railroad and by the Nile, resolved to protect the revolution, the people of Dayrout caused the trains carrying the British troops to be derailed and eight soldiers killed.

The British military boats sailing through the Nile were also attacked and forced to stop from proceeding to Assiut. In relation, the British troops blasted the civilian inhabitants of Dayrout, made shame court proceedings for the heroes of the revolution & executed 54.

April 14 of each year marks the anniversary of the noble resistance by the inhabitants of Ban Oday, Assiut, led by Sheikhs Ahmed Al Khateeb and Al Maghrabi against the French expedition troops.
